On the 15th of January we went to Cilfynydd water centre. The first activity we done was learning about the water cycle, we learnt words like, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, run-off, infiltration and transpiration. We also built a puzzle which represented the water cycle.
We then did some experiments the first experiment we done was looking at water evaporating, to do this we had a little plastic container and we put 2ml of water in we done that by using a pipette. We put it on a stand and put a little candle underneath which was lit. We then watched it evaporate and turn back into water on the container. We also done another experiment which included us putting a pinch of salt in some water then we took a pipette and took 2ml of water again and put it in the container. We then waited and went onto the next activity.
The next activity we done was having a look at what would happen to houses if we chopped down trees on hills and built houses on the land. We got a small bucket of water and poured it over the houses on the hill and looked at what would happen to the houses at the bottom of the hill. What happened was that the houses at the bottom of the hill got flooded and then there wasn't as much infiltration as there was when there was trees. We then went back inside and looked at what happened to the salt water. We was all amazed at what had happened to the salt water it all changed back into salt.
We couldn't do all of the activities we were supposed to due to the weather that day. We did get a peace of blue plastic sheet and hovered it over a bucket and there was four teams the rules were there was a bucket in the middle which was full of water, one person from each team to have a sponge and get as much water as the could, and squeezed it over the plastic sheet. The team that one was team three which was our team.
Next we had some water which was full of mud and we had a choice of two filters out of three. Our team chose cotton wool and a jay cloth. It didn't go very well but one team out of the four teams done very well and won that team was team four. After that we had our lunch. We was lucky that day because it was raining we got to sit inside.
After that we were supposed to go on the rocks by the River Taff but we couldn't because the beach was flooded. We then tried to go on the bridge but it was to icy so we couldn't for health and safety reasons. We did manage to see the river from a distance but didn't manage to do the activity by the river. So instead we planned an experiment but we didn't get to do it.
We then took a walk to the pond and each group had two fishing nets each and went pond dipping. Our group done very well and had loads of creatures in our container. The point of this was to try and find one of the creatures that couldn't live in a polluted area. We did find one of them creatures it was called damsel fly nymph. So we found out that that pond wasn't polluted because if it was polluted we wouldn't have found it. We was very lucky and was the group which found that creature.
We walked back to the classroom with our creatures in our container and tipped them in a big white tray. We had a microscope between two and had a little container each we then put a little bit of water in it and took one creature each. We then put it under the microscope and looked at them at a closer view. The hardest part of that was getting the microscope to focus and to keep the creature still so we could see it.
That was the last activity that day because it was time to head back to school. As a gift we had a water bottle and activity book to take home from the water centre. We all had a lovely day.
